COIM: new pilot plant TPU

C.O.I.M. S.p.A, an Italian multinational company producing specialty chemicals since 1962 and operating worldwide with nineteen manufacturing and trading companies, inaugurates in Offanengo (CR) a new pilot plant dedicated to thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU).

The COIM pilot plant, designed and built using the very latest technologies available, represents an example of excellence on the current competitive market. COIM develops new materials and optimizes those that already exist, in preparation for their entry into production. It also tests custom solutions and new products for specific customers, through small-scale production processes and samples.

“The pilot plant is a strategic resource for COIM's research and development activities. In fact, once new trends have been identified, it will enable new solutions that anticipate market developments to be tested and created more rapidly. A true innovation strategy” states Massimo Tonani, the COIM Site Manager. “TPU is not a commodity but a special material, which can be adapted to an infinite number of custom solutions and developments that meet new needs, in terms of both performance and aesthetics. It has numerous fields of application, which range from the production of pipes and profiles to extruded and calendered sheets, from shoe soles to the production of ski boots, from electric cable sheaths to moulded articles for use in a wide range of applications. The innovations developed using the plant are then inspected at our laboratories by simulating and testing the desired properties of the finished product, such as touch, transparency and lightness”.

“The market sometimes needs innovations to be tested, which requires great efforts during the production phase” explains Antonio Piroddi, COIM's Laripur TPU Division Manager. “This plant will make this procedure more streamlined. It will be possible to carry out various tests without depriving the COIM production plant of capacity and time and using a limited quantity of raw materials, with a lower impact on the environment”.
