On Monday, 9th May, C.O.I.M. S.p.A., an Italian multinational company producing specialty chemicals since 1962 and operating worldwide with nineteen manufacturing and trading companies, at its Offanengo site (CR), opened its new research laboratory, the global reference for water-based products in the Filco and Hydrolar ranges.
“The new laboratory, with state-of-the-art equipment compliant with the highest international standards, will benefit from the synergism between the two product ranges, which share a common technological matrix. The main focus will be the research and development for particle size measurement of aqueous dispersions and, for other chemical, technical and mechanical measurements, the laboratory will work together with COIM central laboratory, an example of excellence in the Italian chemical industry in terms of technology and size”, explains Mariaenrica Cesano, Filco and Hydrolar Technical Manager and Filco Business Manager. “The new Offanengo laboratory will be the global reference for the companies in the COIM Group for water-based products. We are already working on about ten research projects, which will culminate in an equivalent number of COIM innovations in this field. We will maintain this rhythm in coming years with a view to always offering an extremely high degree of innovation for our water-based product portfolio”.
COIM has produced water-based polymer solutions for several years, gradually replacing solvent-based products. “The investment in the research and development activities in the field of aqueous dispersions will enable us, on the one hand, to provide a more complete response to the market demand for more sustainable products free of co-solvents and made from more eco-friendly raw materials and, on the other hand, it will enhance the company’s customized product offer, with solutions designed to meet the specific needs of each customer”, explains Giuseppe Librandi, COIM President and CEO.
“Aqueous dispersions are highly versatile chemical formulations. By modifying the composition of water-based polymers, they can be given an extremely wide range of characteristics suitable for diverse applications, such as hardness, softness, mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, resistance to hydrolysis, compatibility, gloss and opacity”, concludes Mrs. Cesano.
Due to this further investment, COIM will increase its competitive edge in the field of aqueous dispersions, which are widely used on extremely important markets across the world.
Filco is designed for reinforcement fibre manufacturers for the construction, among other things, of boats, automotive components, wind turbines, pipes and tanks.
On the other hand, the Hydrolar solutions are designed for customers that formulate products for treating leather and tissues, used in the automotive and fashion sectors. The Hydrolar solutions, which protect the products against problems such as scratches and stains and ensure an optimal appearance and hand feel, follow the latest trends – such as extreme opacity of car seats or a glossy finish for women’s handbags – and also set new ones.
